Tabarca & Elche

Tabarca is a small island just off the coast from Santa Pola, which is south of Alicante. The ferry runs every hour takes around 20 minutes to cross over to the island. It can be a little rough if the ferry is driving against the tide, I enjoyed the ride, but Jan had different thoughts about the trip! Tabarca is a quaint little place and is inhabited with a small spanish community. Tabarca’s bays attract small boats from all around the area as the waters are so clear. It is a protected coast, so there is no fishing whatsoever. This makes it great for snorkelling as the sea is full of fish and corals.

The other attraction on the island is the numerous beachfront seafood restarants – well worth a visit.

A few miles inland is the historic town of Elche, renown for it’s leather industry and the largest collection of palm trees in Europe. Our visit was in the early evening, and we managed a quick visit around the main municiple park, before a relaxing drive back to Verdemar III.
