The Mar Menor

The Mar Menor is a huge salty lagoon separated from the Mediterranean sea by the La Manga peninsula, a spit of land about 12 miles in length and only 100 metres wide in places. There are a number of small spanish seaside towns along the 50 mile coastline which have real charm, but it is the water itself that is stunning. Protected from the flow of the Mediterranean, the shallow water is warm and clear, with a relatively high salinity which makes floating easy. It has been described as “the largest swimming pool in the world”  and is great for learning to swim safely or trying out other watersports.

Tip: For a full screen slideshow – click on the little box at the right of the picture navigator .

At the Northern end are famous medicinal mud baths where you can slap the mud on to your hearts content and rejuvenate your skin. Great fun if you can cope with the smell, but Jan has banned me from putting the pictures on the web – spoil sport!
